THE BEST OF YOUTH
Luigi Lo Cascio, Alesio Boni
R, 6hrs., 8mins.
Foreign, Italy

Yes, the running time is correct. All six hours of it. And time wasn't hard to find when I get to stay home this long holidays. And I'll start this mini-review by saying never did this Italian movie epic evoked a peek at the watch, even from an impatient viewer that I am.

"Youth ambitiously traces the lives of two brothers-- one a generous-to-a-fault physician (Lo Cascio), the other a tortured romantic-turned-tetchy soldier (Boni)-- over four decades of broken love affairs, political strife, World Cup wins, and natural and domestic disasters."

This was a blind buy from me, and how lucky am I to ever see this movie. It is truly engrossing and satisfying. This is storytelling at the highest order, and though it tackled heavy and sometimes depressing themes, it did made a case for faith and goodwill of humanity.

Six hours is a pretty big investment, but the payback is beyond price.
