Wow...DVD is already ten years old. Its been that long huh? Must be, and If I recall it right, it was 98 (or 99?) when I got my first DVD player. Titles were scarce then and definitely not cheap. I remember renting some DVD titles in a videoshop near Lip-lin school for a hefty P80, and thats just for one night only. I bet when we first saw DVD video quality, we watched in awe right? Far far away from the hassle of cleaning the video head of the VHS...or tweaking the tracking control just to get the right picture, DVD players and titles reached mass numbers, and became the most succesfull video format ever....all 65,000 titles and counting.
I thought I would never leave DVD.....I really thought so until I saw High Definition. And coz of corporate greed, we have two HD formats vowing to replace DVD. Thats HD DVD and Blu-ray. Think DVD as a 3.2 megapixel digicam, and HD the 7.1 megapixel or better version. HD video is stunningly detailed and top-tier titles display three-dimensionality in them. Imagine seeing the depths of every moon craters in Laurence Fishburne's face, or a blemish (a pimple) in Tom Cruise's face which the make-up artist failed to cover up. Or porno in HD, that would be........unpleasant to see!!! I am back to square one once again...titles are scarce, but thanks to online trading, its easy to get pre-owned but cheaper titles. Yeah, DVD wont come away too soon. Not now, not even 2008, but for those sitting on the fence.....Once you go HD, there's no turning back.
